Alex Schouvaloff is very happy to offer Short Courses in Japanning and Varnishing, Gilding and Decorative Art Restoration at the London studio by appointment. Alex has over 20 years teaching experience having been lacquer and japanning teacher at West Dean College, Senior Lecturer in Restoration & Conservation at London Metropolitan University and Japanning & Wood Conservation teacher at City & Guilds of London Art School. He still teaches at the latter two.
Alex has also completed samples to show japanning technique for The Geffrye Museum, Colchester Museum Service and The Victoria & Albert Museum. The V&A set is illustrated below and is on display in the Dr Susan Weber New Furniture Gallery. Further details can be found in Portfolio
Japanning & Varnishing Short Course This course aims to get hands-on with paint and varnish, refine skills and understand the material and historic context of japanned and varnished surfaces. We will follow the principles of 17thC varnish recipes but use modern materials where appropriate. Design choices are up to you though; you can follow traditional designs or come up with something entirely your own.
Gilding Short Course This course is for beginners to gilding and will concentrate on water gilding, although oil gilding and verre eglomisé (gilding on glass) will be covered. We will prepare the gesso ground and bole layers and then practice the various gilding techniques.
Restoration & Conservation of Decorative Art The idea of this course is for you to bring your own object, preferably with a wooden substrate but there are many possibilities, and be taken through the complete restoration process, learning relevant information and techniques along the way.
Flexibility is key for both course content and for delivery. Generally, a course spans 4-5 days from 10:00am-1:00pm but can be tailored differently. The restoration of decorative art course is usually longer. Please just get in touch to discuss your interests and availability.
It is always helpful to know in advance what object(s) you would like to work on for the decorative art restoration course.
"Alex is a superb teacher, using patient and clear instruction he has given me a solid understanding of Japanning. He made the process fun and has given me the confidence and skills to continue practicing the various techniques learnt back in my studio". Kerry Lemon.
